When a notice comes into Michigan Tech that an IP address within Michigan Tech’s range has been involved in illegal file sharing, the Resnet connection is immediately suspended. There are several steps that must be followed before the connection will be restored.
Schedule an appointment with IT to discuss the notice. This can be done by calling 487-1754.
Pay a $100 DMCA administrative fine.
Schedule to attend an ethical decision making workshop through the Student Life Judicial Affairs office. This office can be reached at 487-2951.
Once all three of these conditions have been met, the Resnet connection will be restored, but not before.
The University does not monitor your connections for content; however, once your connection leaves campus other organizations such as the MPAA and RIAA may be monitoring for illegal content download, and have been known to file DMCA notices, as well as take legal action.
We strongly encourage you to use alternative legal methods to obtain copyrighted material. We have made arrangements with one of many providers for digital content and encourage you to check them out at http://www.ruckus.com. The basic player, from Ruckus, is free to all Michigan Tech students.
