Who defines appropriate use?
The University defines what is appropriate and what is not appropriate use of MTU's computer resources. See MTU's Computer Use Policy in your Student Handbook for more information.
Also refer to Computer Misuse as outlined in the Student Code of Community Conduct..
What am I allowed to download?
Anything not prohibited by federal, state, or university laws. See MTU's Computer Use Policy in your Student Handbook for more information.
Can I download MP3s, Movies, Games or Software?
In accordance with Federal and State laws MTU forbids the transportation of any material that is in violation with its copyright. If you are caught transporting any materially unlawfully over the MTU network you can, and will be, held wholly responsible.
Can I run my own web/ftp/etc. server?
Yes, but Resnet reserves the right to terminate your service if:
- The servers are found to have illegal information on them.
- The servers are causing too high of a stress on the Resnet network.
- The servers are being used for something that could be detrimental to the University.
- The servers are running a for-profit service, which is in violation of MTU and Merit policies.
Can I run a game server?
You are permitted to run game servers as long as it, and all the users connected to it, are contained within the Resnet network and the server does not go off Campus and onto the internet.
What kind of servers am I prohibited from running?
You are NOT allowed to provide network services to others. In no instance should the following types of servers be connected to MTU's network: DNS, DHCP, BOOTP, or any other server that manages network addresses.
Can I have Resnet for more than one
computer?
Yes, there are two ways to do this. You can register up
to five devices on Resnet using a switch and/or you can
purchase a router. You cannot use a router to provide network
access to anyone else though.
If you wish to use a router, you will have to know how
your router works. You will need to know the WAN MAC address of your router.
If you have a router with wireless, know
the security risks that come with wireless. Out of the box
almost all routers are insecure! Again, depending
on your router's vendor, you can enable WEP or WPA encryption,
disable SSID broadcast, and use MAC address filtering. These
three steps will help, but is not limited to, keeping your router secure. You must use an SSID that is not obscene and does not conflict with university sanctioned services. Spoofing the MTU network services is illegal and will be prosecuted! MTU requires that you run your wireless router at no more than 35 mW. This prevents adding additional noise into the spectrum. Also note any unlicensed devices such as cordless phones, Bluetooth phones, microwave ovens, other APs, video cameras, and may other unlicensed devices do cause interference issues. Due to the broad
spectrum of vendors, Resnet does not offer customer support
relating to routers. If you have questions about your router,
you will need to contact your vendor or the place where
you purchased your router for support.
Who do I contact if I have questions?
You may email us at resnet@mtu.edu, call Customer Service at 487-2000, or go to their office at B24 in the
EERC. If you have a question about your connection or any other technical
query, you can contact the Resnet Consultants by calling 483-9955 or by
visiting B09 in the EERC.
Can I use X piece of software?
Only if you have a legal license for the software in question and if the software complies with Michigan Tech computing and network policies.
Will you help me install X piece of software or hardware?
Our Resnet Consultants can help you install any hardware purchased from
MTU free of charge. If you need help installing an ethernet card that was
not purchased fro MTU, our consultants can assist you, but there is a $30
per hour charge with a minimum of one hour's work. Resnet Consultants
cannot assist you with any other type of hardware.
My computer has a virus, what do I do?
Refer to the McAfee Virus Alerts or contact the Resnet Consultant's office at 3-9955 for help in removing the virus.
What happens if I violate MTU's Computer Use Policy?
Most minor/first time offenses are due to ignorance of the policy. Although ignorance is not an excuse for actions, the first offense consists of an informational warning in most cases. An example of this type of warning follows:
You were recently involved in posting or mailing a pyramid scheme on the network. Things like (but not limited to):
- Make.Money.Fast
- Make Money by selling recipes
- Dial this number
- etc
are all examples of pyramid schemes. You are in violation of rules against Pyramid Schemes and risk losing your account for this activity. Pyramid Schemes are not allowed on this or any network and the rules against them will be strictly enforced at this site.
Please review the Computer Use Policy in your student handbook and the Computer Misuse information found in the MTU Student Code of Community Conduct in the University Community handbook for more information. If you do not have or cannot find your copy, see the MTU Dean of Students office for one.
Please acknowledge reading and understanding this message via e-mail. Failure to acknowledge within 3 days could result in your account being temporarily shut off pending office visit.
Any further offenses of the policy (not just a second time for the same thing) and some first offenses (security issues, Harassment etc), or any offenses where the complaint originated in the Dean of Students Office, will be turned over to/handled by the Dean of Students Office.
Second time offenses will not only be charged with violation of the computer use policy (Penalty: Not less than Disciplinary Warning, not more than Expulsion), but failure to comply with official requests (Penalty: Not less than Disciplinary Warning, not more than Expulsion). Cases handled by the dean's office result in a range of sanctions outlined in the booklet, "Student Code of Community Conduct ." You can get a copy of this booklet in the Dean of Students Office.
Any questions regarding the Computer Use Policy can be directed to Margaret Landsparger (margaret@mtu.edu). In some cases, your account will be suspended pending the Dean's hearing. Your account will only be turned back on when you have met all of the requirements of the Dean's office, and your account bill is paid in full. If your connection is disconnected for violation of any campus network policies, you will be assessed a $100.00 administrative fee.
Can I use a wireless router and what are the risks? Yes, with some limitations, it depends on what or whom it is being shared with. You may ONLY use a router to share your connection between your own computers and NOT with others as per Michigan Tech's Computer Use Policy. If someone else requests service, they must register their own account. By sharing service with a friend or roommate, you are breaking Michigan Tech's Computer Use Policy and subjecting yourself to take full responsibility for the actions of the person(s) you are sharing with. You will have to know how your router works. You will need to know the WAN MAC address of your router. If you have a router with wireless, know the security risks that come with wireless. Out of the box almost all routers are insecure! Again, depending on your router's vendor, you can enable WEP or WPA encryption, disable SSID broadcast, and use MAC address filtering. Due to the broad spectrum of vendors, Resnet does not offer customer support relating to routers. If you have questions about your router, you will need to contact your vendor or the place where you purchased your router for support. Note, not all routers will work with our network for one reason or another. Resnet has done testing with common routers you can purchase in the area. As of now, the routers known to work with our network are the Linksys WRT54G and Belkin F5D7230-4. Pictures of each are shown below. Although Resnet does not offer support for routers, we suggest using or purchasing one of the following models that are known to work with our network.

Out of the routers Resnet has tested, we have also found a few that have some issues with connecting to our network. As a forewarning, if you have purchased or are planning to use either the D-Link WBR-1310 or Trendnet TEW-432BRP, they will not work. You will need to either exchange it for a known working model, or use another means to connect.

I want to host a LAN party, can I do it over the network? Yes, you should have no problem 'joining' a multicast group from any Resnet subnet on campus!
Can I statically set my IP address? No, this is not permitted under any circumstances. If you do set your IP statically, there is a strong chance you will have your service suspended and will be contacted regarding the matter. In which case we will ask you to remove the static configuration.
